Motivational Book of the Month

I’ve been playing the bass for over 2 years, and suddenly, I’ve lost motivation for it and music almost. Haven’t practiced in a while, and yet I have everything I need. What can I do to motivate myself? I know it’s what I want to continue doing, but I really do lack what I need the most in life at the moment. Any inspirational stories? Books? Anything?

Youtube videos, my friend. I haven’t been on a super long hiatus from guitar yet, but I’ve had little spells here and there. Go look up some videos of a band or bassist you love and see if that helps. When I look up videos I’ll sit there and go "This is why I’m playing, because I want to do THAT one day."

I know about HGTV and magazine sites which have inspiration banks, and some places charge you for it. Do you have any good place for real home pictures and inspiration? Not like catalogue stuff which are built studio sets. I want the real deal! Note: Free and online, not in printed mags.

Don’t such artists in ballet and piano get their motivation from their eagerness to please others, aka the audience?

I’ve realized that all my life, I’ve been an exhibitionist, showing off to others. Right now, I’m doing things that I wouldn’t do if I didn’t have an audience to build intrinsic motivation, motivation that comes from within. Doesn’t performance art hinder this goal?

People who get involved in Performing Arts usually do so because they enjoy the CHALLENGE of MASTERING A PHYSICAL SKILL and have the PERSONAL DISCIPLINE to do it.. the other, less talented and less motivated people Play air guitar, or jump around their parents basement or sing into a hair brush.. all to the applause of thousands that ONLY THEY CAN HEAR… and they dream about being Famous.

What is the motivation for someone to kiss a corpse in a casket? What does that kiss symbolize.

I don’t know but it freaks the crap out of me. Both my grampas died in the past year and everybody was kissing them and touching theirs hands and even encouraged me to hold the ones hand. I don’t think so.

I was having panic attacks just being in the same room.

I have to come up with a presentation on Education for work. Why it’s important and some motivational things to say. I’m not asking you to do my homework, just taking some ideas :).

I would never do something as horrible as encourage someone to go to school! D:

However, to answer your question…

Talk about learning not school, school sucks, everyone 18 and under thinks so. Learning however, is fun, quite unlike school.

Learning is a lot of things in fact, exciting, interesting, new, creative. All that good stuff."

There are not a lot of people who would argue that learning boring and pointless. There are however loads of people who can argue quite convincingly that school is boring and pointless, and then back it up with evidence and logic.

So your best bet would be to focus on the wonder of learning, in my opinion. Although school will probably crush it out of them.

Unfortunately I don’t have any ideas for specific questions, sorry.

I’ve been wanting to practice designing clothing, but I find it hard to get inspiration from anything. I also need help deciding on color schemes. Any ideas?

Often learning about how other people work is helpful when you are trying to get started. Do you have cable tv? Lifetime TV is now running Project Runway, a competition with aspiring fashion designers - it’s on 10pm Thursday nights where I live and it has reruns at other times. I’d suggest watching - it’s a great show and you would get to see how these designers work. That being said, inspiration can come from anything - look around you - nature, colors, traffic, architecture, objects, street signs, vintage fashion, movies, people - you can really get inspiration from essentially anything. What you have to do is be open to things, look, go for walks, talk to people. Heck you could design a whole line on people arguing. If you look at the essence of what something is, what makes something interesting, then think how you can apply that to something else. For instance, the word calm - it conveys a number of things, quiet, peace, soft colors, time, endings, ocean, water, moods … try some words and see what you can come up with, then try some ‘things,’ see where it leads you. One of the assignments on Project Runway was walking around New York City - signs, buildings, people, traffic, noise - it was a great assignment that produced really interesting designs.
