Inspiration?

How do novel writers think of original ideas for books.I write alot of stories for my class, but if i try to write novels i end up using a topic from a book i have read.It is the one downside to reading too many books.

They listen to the news, probably.
I mean that their ideas come from everyday life and of course they r not always original.
In that case, they combine stuff 2 make them seem original.
As 4 using a topic from a book u’ve read, it’s not always bad, cause a story evolves in the process and maybe afterwards u end up with a completely different story!
As u c, insiration doesn’t necessarily mean originality! ;-)

  1. Well, as cheesy as it may sound, use what you have. I often take different experiences in my life, like arguments, happy moments, hilarious things that happened with friends, and then expand upon them. I take the arguments and see how they could have gone if I’d been my character, or what would happen if they are taken to the extreme.

Also, no book anymore can claim to be completely original or never done before. So if you have an idea for a book, it doesn’t mean that you can’t use it because it’s been done before. Just make sure you put your own flair and detail into it.

    Hope that helps.

  3. Seriously, anything that you write will be reminiscent of something someone else has written. I’m pretty sure Shakespeare covered all the bases. =3

Any book that you read is probably going to sound somewhat like something you’ve read before. If you write a story and it seems like that’s happening, think about what happened to the character in the story it reminds you of and make the opposite thing happen. If your character is a prince and his father is killed by his uncle who coincidentally takes over the throne and marries the prince’s mother (i.e. Hamlet), make the prince actually kill the uncle right away and have him live through the repercussions.

Do you see what I’m saying?

  4. Like someone said, there is no original idea. There is however many ways to present characters, situations, circumstances, surroundings, environments, settings, habits, etc. etc. Example, I can write: Paul pulled a 45 caliber gun from his back pocket and shot his wife. Or John owned a 45 caliber gun but he kept it locked up in his safe. Or Peter reached for the 45 revolver but he was too late. As you can see, their are several ways to talk about a 45 revolver or hand gun or pistol or how someone reacts differently confronted with a similar situation.

There are no new ways to mention a firearm but, the ways how that pistol is used are almost unlimited. The same holds true when you deal with a circumstance or situation. Hope I help you a bit.
