Is it difficult to get work as a Motivational Speaker if you are to become one?

I am considering changing professions and becoming a "Motivational Speaker."
Public speaking is not a problem. Is a particular knowledge of certain subjects necessary or can they be learned as you work in this field, or would that be too much work?

The most important thing to being a motivational speaker is being able to motivate.

If you can make people motivated enough to get up and go get to work and do the work well than you have a shot. Too many people don’t seem top realize that it’s more than just saying a bunch of stuff on stage and being "synergy" infused.

  2. You certainly don’t need to be a subject matter expert; witness the number of professional athletes and coaches who do this sort of work. However, realize that this isn’t the kind of profession that you "get a job" in. There are no companies which hire motivational speakers as full-time employees. You would basically have to work free-lance, and your first motivational effort would have to be motivating someone to hire you to do this!

  3. is it difficult to get work? *yes*

You will need to find your own speaking engagements.

For quite a while, you will not be a speaker, but a salesman - trying to sell yourself.

  4. You need to have a story to tell that others find motivational, and you need to be able to market that story. Having a career as a celebrity (sports, entertainment, etc) or being an author is also useful. Check out these links for some ideas:
